Astragalus – Root Powder – Organic

Latin name: Astragalus membranaceus Part used: Root Affects: Digestive system, immune system The Astragalus plant grows in Korea, Mongolia, Japan, Taiwan, and northern China. Known in Chinese as Huang Qi, it has been used medicinally for more than 1,000 years. In the classical text of Shen Nung Pen Tsao Ching (around 100 A.D.), founder of Chinese herbal medicine, Huang Qi was classified as a superior herb. One of its best-known health benefits is its ability to strengthen the immune system. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy experience not only side effects such as nausea and hair loss, but also weakening of the immune system, mainly due to the reduction of white blood cells. Astragalus is considered especially valuable in this area, as it is regarded as one of the best long-term immune tonics. It is noteworthy that in China, Japan, and even in some hospitals in North America, Astragalus is used to help protect patients from the side effects of chemotherapy. How Astragalus Supports Immunity Similar to Echinacea, Astragalus strengthens the immune system by increasing levels of certain cells that fight invading pathogens. These include macrophages and natural killer cells. Macrophages “consume” microbial invaders, while natural killer cells attack and destroy viruses and cancer cells. Astragalus also increases antibody levels in the body. These compounds attach themselves to foreign invaders, allowing the immune system to destroy them more effectively. Furthermore, Astragalus stimulates the production of interferon, a powerful antiviral compound that inhibits viral activity. One study found that interferon levels remained elevated for two months after Astragalus consumption had stopped. Astragalus also supports the bone marrow, where white blood cells mature. Animal studies showed that Astragalus increased white blood cell production. A study conducted at the University of Texas Medical Center in Houston revealed that Huang Qi restored or improved the function of white blood cells taken from cancer patients. Remarkably, some damaged white blood cells became even more active than those taken from healthy individuals. Some preliminary studies in China have shown that Astragalus not only improved immune function, but also increased the survival rate of certain cancer patients. Protection Against Colds In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Astragalus is used to help prevent colds and upper respiratory infections. Chinese clinical studies showed that Astragalus was effective in reducing the occurrence of common colds. One study in China involving 1,000 individuals with weakened immunity found that those using Astragalus (tablets or nasal sprays) experienced fewer colds and milder symptoms. Other Uses In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this herb is also used for night sweats, deficiency of chi (characterized by fatigue, weakness, anorexia, and digestive problems), and diarrhea. It may also benefit individuals prone to asthma and people with diabetes. Huang Qi may additionally be added to rice dishes and soups. Using Astragalus Astragalus root is used in many forms, including dried roots, tinctures, liquid extracts, tea bags, powdered root, capsules, and tablets. Because Astragalus stimulates immune activity, it may interfere with medications intended to suppress the immune system, such as those used after organ transplantation. In general, Astragalus is considered a relatively safe herb suitable for long-term immune support. However, individuals with fever or autoimmune conditions should use it cautiously. It should also be noted that Astragalus should be used as part of an overall wellness approach and not as a standalone “treatment” for disease. You can also find Astragalus in our herbal blend “Immune Support”, combined with other beneficial herbs.
